What does a school counselor do?

A school counselor develops, coordinates, and  implements a comprehensive program to address the needs of a school district. A school counselor works closely with teachers, administrators, students, parents, and outside resources to help students become contributing members of our society.

A school counselor makes connections with all students K-12 through the use of individual counseling, group counseling, or classroom lessons.

A comprehensive program consists of meeting the needs and implementing prevention and responsive services to benefit all students in grades K-12. The Milbank School District follows the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) National Model and Framework, along with the South Dakota Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program.

How do I see my school counselor?

There are several ways and reasons to visit a counselor.

  • A teacher might refer you

  • A parent might refer you

  • A counselor might ask you to come in

  • You can always just stop on in.

  • The court system might ask you to see one

 Is counseling confidential?

In most circumstances counseling is confidential however, there are codes of ethics that counselors must follow that make sure you are safe and not in danger. A counselor needs to inform only those people who will help you in certain circumstances.

These circumstances include.
